Background: Inara is a Companion, a glorified term for a whore (which Mal doesn't let her forget). She was born on Sihnon and grew up there, going to the Training House there as well. While she was well on her way to becoming High Priestess, it is unknown why she left to rent a shuttle on Serenity. Despite the fact that they fight constantly, there is serious sexual tension between Mal and Inara and she gets really upset when Mal sleeps with a friend of hers, the Madam of the Heart of Gold brothel (see "Heart of Gold"). She actually leaves Serenity for a time but is forced back on after she is approached by the Operative.
