Background: River Tam is a genius. Even from an early age, growing up on Osiris with her older brother Simon and their parents, there was no mistaking that River was special. When she got older, she begged her parents to allow her to attend a special academy for gifted children and they agreed. After being sent there, she began to send strange letters to Simon that he eventually realized were secret messages asking him to help her. Their parents wouldn't believe him so he had to rescue her himself. After the escape, the two of them ended up on Serenity. As time went on, it became clear that River isn't quite right. She is a skilled fighter (she once shot three men with her eyes closed [see "War Stories"]) and in Serenity, she kills a large amount of Reavers with nothing but a few of their primitive weapons. She can also read minds, though she isn't very reliable because of her psycosis.
