Background: Simon was raised with his younger sister River in luxury on Osiris. While he was quite gifted, he was nothing compared to River and was usually being corrected by her. He loves his younger sister more than anything and risked his entire medical career to break her out of the Academy she was held hostage at. After sneaking her out in a crygenically frozen state, he brought her on board Serenity. After arousing Mal's suspicion about what was in the huge crate Simon brought on with him, Mal opens it and awakens River. After a showdown with an undercover Alliance agent (see "Serenity pt.1 & 2"), Mal agreed to let them stay on the ship and they have been avoiding detection ever since.
